Free ticket to SG wanted

By dryland

Hi everyone, I’d like to answer the question on Economy topic. However, I think the question “What would you do practically, as an individual, to help Vietnam overcome the economic crisis?” is a bit irrelevant. That is because, the current economic crisis that has been affecting almost every country, every business, and everyone at different degrees is a very complex and intangible mess; and I think, as an individual, there is really not much me [or anyone actually] can do to help Viet Nam overcome the current difficult situation – well that is unless you are Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, or newly elected US President Barrack Obama :D .

That said, I will talk instead about “What am I doing,” about my work on a day-to-day basis that I believe is lending a hand to improve the life of people and business around me and my community. In the end, overcoming economic difficulty is all about improving people’s quality of life. First, a little bit of background information: I’m a business developer manager for a medium-size Vietnamese software company. I used to work in the US for several years, and only had decided to comeback to work in Viet Nam last June. Back then, hell has not broke loose, (I mean the crisis has not begun), and we were doing ok. But two months into the job, all the sudden, things were getting tough: projects got delay, customer leave or stop ordering, cash flow reduced and we have few work for everyone. Other companies would response by cutting costs, reducing budget, and firing people. But I share a belief with our company that it will do its best not to fire anyone.

As a business developer, my job is to find new customers, new jobs to be able to keep our people working. So what did I do? So I tried to traveled a bit more, I engaged and talked to more potential customers, tried to find more new business opportunities from foreign partners. Basically, I tried to bring home more works. I used my experiences from working in the US to help improving internal processes to make our company more efficient, more transparent, and more productive. I worked on setting up training sessions, and English classes, helping other employees improved their skill set. Between those things, I ran around offices talked to people, helped to solve their problems within my ability. I read books and encouraged people around me to do so. I worked hard and learned new things everyday. Nothing fancy, basically, I’m just trying to do my job a bit better.

I have no hope that my actions will help Viet Nam – as a whole country – to overcome its current hardship, but in the context of this contest, I’d say I’m doing my part to help improving the situation by not adding our employees to the unemployment mass. I believe that similar efforts are actually happening everywhere, especially in medium and small businesses in Viet Nam. We can see/feel that the situation is stabilizing and improving bit by bit. And I also believe that you (the audiences and conference attendees) and I, collectively, can definitely bring Viet Nam out of this economy crisis in a near future. In his 1987 classic book ‘Growing a Business,’ Paul Hawken wrote: “Being a good human being is good business,” and I’d say “Being a good human being is helping the economy.”

Thank you for listening.
